Vietnam, Viet Nam, Vietnam or Vietnam,
in long-form the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Cộng hoà Xã hội Chủ
nghĩa Việt Nam is a
country in Southeast Asia located east of the Indochinese peninsula.
It shares its borders with China, Laos,
and Cambodia. Its capital is Hanoi. The official language is Vietnamese and the
currency is the dong. It is a one-party communist state, ruled by the
Vietnamese Communist Party since 1975.
The country is ranked 66th country in
order of surface area (330,967 km2) and the 16th most populous country in the
world with approximately 102.8 million inhabitants in 2021. Made up of a long
maritime coast that stretches for nearly 3,260 kilometers, it borders the Gulf
of Thailand to the west and the South China Sea to the east. About 85% of the
population is of the Viet ethnic group found near the rice fields, the
remainder being made up of the 54 minority groups recognized by the Vietnamese
government and mainly distributed in the mountainous reliefs of the north,
north-west, and south. center.
Fruit of a long and eventful history,
marked by foreign occupations and successive wars of resistance, Vietnam is, in
2019, with a dynamic economy showing one of the highest growth rates in the
region, one of the newly industrialized countries, counting among the Asian
Tigers. Its economy is based in particular on services, agriculture, and
exports with China, the United States, Singapore, South Korea, and Japan as
main trading partners.
Vietnam is a member of the United
Nations (UN), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the World Trade Organization
(WTO).
